Teaching is never a truly easy task, but there will always be problems that seem to make things harder. Before teaching at Pioneer Language School, I had the opportunity to teach in a public school here in Japan for two and a half years.

With that amount of time, I managed to get comfortable teaching in Japan, just before the new coronavirus came along and flipped everything upside down.

Teaching English as a foreign language before corona meant that I would rely heavily on gestures and facial expressions to help convey meaning in new or difficult words when interacting with my students.

But when masks became mandatory and social distance became more normal, I had to get more creative when expressing new words.

While I still make facial expressions out of habit, I have had to adjust my gestures to be broader and more expressive.

The adjustment has been slow, but hopefully, the pandemic will end soon, and we can smile together again(without Masks!).

【教える事】

誰かに「教える」ということは、決して簡単なことではありませんが、次から次へと多くの乗り越えなければいけない壁が出てきます。

パイオニアランゲージスクールで講師として教える前、私は日本の公立学校でALTとして2年半子供たちに英語を教える機会がありました。

そんな中、日本の学校で教えることに慣れ始めた矢先、コロナウイルスが全てをひっくり返してしまいました。

コロナの状況が悪化する前は、新しい単語や、難しいフレーズを子供たちに教える際、私はジェスチャーや顔の表情を使い、英語を話せない生徒達になるべく分かりやすく伝えていました。

しかし、マスク着用の義務化や、「ソーシャルディスタンス」が生活の一部となると、ジェスチャーや顔の表情を使った英語の教え方も、もっと工夫する必要が出てきました。

私はまだ習慣から顔の表情に頼ってしまう時があるので、どのようにすれば生徒達にもっと分かりやすく伝わるか常に考えなくてはいけないと感じています。

日々、トライ&エラーですが、パンデミックが一刻も早く収束し、再び一緒に笑顔で話し合うことができることを願っています。

もちろんマスクなしで！
